Video testimonials from real customers are some of the most convincing things you can put on a Shopify store. You don’t need a Shopify app to show them: any Online Store 2.0 theme, including Dawn, lets you paste a snippet into a section. This guide takes about ten minutes, once you have a testimonial or two.
1. Collect testimonials from your customers
Create a free Akteora account and make a collect link, as the collect guide explains. For a store, good questions are “What made you decide to buy?” and “How has it been since it arrived?”
Some places to share the link with customers:
- In your shipping confirmation or a follow up email a week or two after delivery.
- As a QR code on a card in the parcel. You can download one from the link’s Share panel.
- In replies to customers who have already said something kind by email or DM.
Ask everyone, not only the customers you expect to be happiest, and if you offer a thank you, make it the same whatever they say. Both are part of staying on the right side of the FTC rule.
When testimonials arrive, approve the ones you want and turn on Show publicly. Add a tag for the product each one is about. You will use those tags in step 4.
2. Build a widget
In Akteora, open Widgets and choose New widget. For a store:
- Carousel works well on a home page: a row of video posters shoppers can swipe.
- Wall suits a dedicated reviews or testimonials page.
- Avatars (a row of faces and your rating) fits neatly near the top of a product page.
Save it and copy the snippet. It looks like this:
<div data-akteora-widget="wgt_…" style="height:320px"></div>
<script src="https://cdn.akteora.com/w.js" async></script>3. Add it to your home page
- In Shopify admin, go to Online Store, then Themes, and choose Customize on your current theme.
- With the home page open, choose Add section where you want the testimonials.
- Pick Custom Liquid and paste your snippet into its Liquid code box.
- Choose Save. The preview shows your testimonials.
If your theme has no Custom Liquid section, it is probably an older theme. You can paste the snippet into a template in Edit code instead, or switch to a free Online Store 2.0 theme such as Dawn.
4. Add it to product pages
On a product page, the best testimonials are about that product. In Akteora, make a widget per product and set it to show only testimonials with that product’s tag.
- In the theme editor, switch to Products and open the template you want.
- Add a Custom Liquid section, or a Custom Liquid block inside the product information section, and paste the product’s snippet.
- Shopify product templates apply to every product that uses them. To show different testimonials on different products, create a new template for each, add its snippet, and assign it to the product under Theme template on the product’s admin page.
If you sell a handful of products, that is quick. For a large catalogue, use one store wide widget on product templates and per product widgets only on your best sellers.
5. Keep your store fast
The Akteora widget is built not to slow a store down:
- It loads asynchronously, after your page, from Akteora’s CDN.
- The box reserves its height, so nothing on the page jumps when it appears.
- Shoppers see still posters. A video only downloads when someone presses play.
- It sets no cookies and loads no analytics, so it adds nothing to your cookie banner.
On the free plan, the widget shows a small “Collect testimonials with Akteora” link. Paid plans can turn it off. For other platforms, see how to add testimonials to any website, and for social media, turn your videos into a reel.
Common questions
Do I need a Shopify app to show video testimonials?
No. Any Online Store 2.0 theme, including Dawn, has a Custom Liquid section that accepts the Akteora snippet. Nothing is installed in your store and no access to your store data is requested.
Will video testimonials slow down my Shopify store?
The Akteora widget loads asynchronously, reserves its own height so nothing on the page moves, and shows still posters until a shopper presses play. The video itself is only downloaded at that point.
Are testimonials the same as Shopify product reviews?
Not quite. Product reviews are star ratings attached to a product, usually from a review app. Testimonials are longer stories in a customer’s own words, often on video, that you choose to feature. Many stores use both.
